SUMMARY:International Association of Maritime Economists 2021 Conference 'Accelerating Transitions'
DESCRIPTION:Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR)\, together with Delft University of Technology (TU-Delft) organized the 2021 IAME conference in one of the main gateways to Europe\, under the name Accelerating Transitions. The aim of the conference was to bring together experts in all aspects of ports and maritime research\, from all parts of the world and to stimulate the exchange of new ideas\, relevant insights and cutting-edge research results.  \nThe location of Rotterdam offered the unique opportunity to visit one of the most modern ports in the world and to join specifically organized interactions with experts and business leaders in the port’s industry. In this light\, the city of Rotterdam and its related port industry also very much welcomed the IAME conference\, also under its initiative to develop into the Maritime Capital of Europe. \nThe IAME conference took place on 25\, 26 and 27 November 2021 in Rotterdam. The conference was truly hybrid in its form\, as besides a physical conference\, an attractive online environment was created\, also allowing online participation from home countries.  \nStavros Karamperidis from University of Plymouth attended the event and delivered a presentation on Cyber-MAR project entitled: ‘Cyber Awareness Raising – An Integrated Maritime Cyber Risk Management Approach’ during the session ‘The digital transition: blockchain and cyber security‘. The presentation was associated to the homonymous technical paper \nHis presentation can be found here. \nDetails about the associated paper can be found here. \nThe detailed program can be found here.

SUMMARY:Valencia pilot demonstration event
DESCRIPTION:Valencia Pilot Demonstration EventThe demonstration event for the first Cyber-MAR pilot was conducted on 16 December 2020. The scenario defined for this pilot was based on the real electrical grid in the port of Valencia. \nThe architecture contains the part of the industrial network for providing power to all the systems\, sensors\, infrastructures\, and companies in the port premises (blue box). It is composed of a fiber communication ring connecting six transformer stations distributed along the port. In addition\, it contains all the systems and servers that a real port authority includes\, such as firewalls\, ERP\, active directory\, mail server\, back-up servers\, etc. Furthermore\, it consists of the Cyber-MAR components deployed for the demonstration\, which are described in the next section (light blue box). Finally\, it has a system out of the port authority network\, the MISP\, used to synchronize known and new detected cyber-security incidents. \nFigure 1 System architecture \nThe system infrastructure for the pilot relied on a Cyber-Range\, where the topology was replicated for running any kind of cyber-attack. That allows critical operators to test the cyber-security of their infrastructure and train employees. \nIn the next figure the Valencia port authority network topology is depicted\, which has been created for the pilot based on the aforementioned architecture. \nFigure 2 Valencia port authority network topology \nDuring the demonstration\, the OT port authority manager receives a SpearPhishing email from the attackers with an infected attached document. The initial infection vector is triggered\, when they enable Macro content in the document: the malware is automatically executed. \nInitially\, the malware becomes persistent on the OT manager’s computer\, and then it exploits the Zerologon vulnerability (CVE 2020-1472) to obtain administrator access on the Domain Controller (Active Directory). With this access\, the malware can perform lateralisation through the network\, infecting and installing persistently on the Active Directory server. \nFigure 3 Valencia port authority network topology – infected \nOnce the malware infects this server\, it can propagate to all the computers\, systems and servers in the Domain immediately using the Windows Remote Management (WinRm)\, and setup permanent reinfection via the Group Policy Object. The malware also installs persistently on each infected system. \nOn each infected machine\, the malware searches for SCADA management software\, so it can start its main objective. The malware uses the Modbus protocol to access\, stop and reprogram the real PLC with a compromised/broken program. This causes a power outage throughout the port. \nA carefully crafted replacement program could also potentially cause physical damage to the power distribution infrastructure or downstream equipment. \nFigure 4 Infection propagated to all domain systems \nFinally\, each infected computer system\, including the Active Directory\, is encrypted with a Cryptolocking/Ransomware module\, so the port users cannot access their files or systems without paying for the decryption key\, or using (often incomplete) backups.\nThis also slows down restoration of the power distribution infrastructure. \nFigure 5 Cryptolocking/Ransomware encryption \nDuring the event\, the Cyber-MAR IDS and XL-SIEM components were detecting each of the steps of the attack and providing real-time information to the cyber-security team. \nIf you want to know more about this pilot demonstration event\, you can find the recorded session below.

SUMMARY:Cyber-MAR Valencia Pilot Event - Material Access
DESCRIPTION:The Valencia Pilot Event took place on 16.12.2020\, virtually at 10.00-13.00 CET\, via zoom meeting. \nThis pilot was about testing and validating an initial version of the Cyber-MAR system in the scope of a cyber-attack scenario on the port authority’s electrical grid\, in the Port of Valencia. The scenario was focused on the simulation of a remote access attack on the IT and OT infrastructure\, and energy grid of the Port of Valencia. The first objective of this attack was to cut off the power supply to the port\, by shutting down the grid management OT system\, with the OT manager’s computer as the the original infection point. The second objective was to simulate a Ransomware attack triggered by the Command & Control server\, that will cryptolock all workstations within the infrastructure of the port. \nDuring this demo\, the Cyber-MAR Cyber Range provided insights of the scenario through different points of view: from an attacker’s perspective and from a defender’s perspective using Intrusion Detection System (IDS) and SIEM. \nAccess to the agenda is provided here. \nAll the material presented during the pilot is available below: \n\nCyber-MAR Overview & Benefits of using Cyber-MAR\, ICCS\nCyber-MAR Architecture and technical modules\, NG\nCyber-MAR Pilot description\, VPF\nCyber-MAR Cyber-range infrastructure\, DIATEAM\n\nThe event has been recorded and can be accessed here. \nPHOTO GALLERY
