The Cyber-SHIP Lab Annual Symposium took place on 21-22 of October 2021, staged as an in-person/online hybrid event.

The symposium highlighted the latest maritime cyber risk evaluation and mitigation research and explored how researchers and industry must collaborate to build cyber resilience. It, also,  featured talks, demonstrations and panels exploring the themes:

  • Maritime: uniquely valuable, uniquely vulnerable?
  • Cyber challenges around maritime positioning, navigation, and communications systems
  • International perspectives and opportunities for maritime cyber resilience collaboration
  • Human factors in maritime cyber security
  • The science and practicalities of effective maritime cyber risk mitigation
  • Industry/research partnership.

Among the speakers/panellists were experts from ABS Group, BIMCO, BMT, Fathom5, DNV, Hensoldt, HFW, Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST), Lloyd’s Register, Marine Accident Investigation Branch, National Cyber Deception Laboratory, Cranfield University, Nettitude, OceanShield, Society of Maritime Industries, Thales, United States Coast Guard, University of Plymouth Maritime Cyber Threats Research Group and Marine Institute, Wärtsilä, and Western Norway University of Applied Sciences.

Dr Kimberly Tam from University of Plymouth, partner of Cyber-MAR project, gave a presenttaion about the project during both Session 2: Real and present hardware—cyber challenges around AIS, navigation systems, and maritime communications protocols and  Session 5: The science and practicalities of effective maritime cyber risk mitigation.
